Sunday, May 19th 2024 – 86* and sunny! Everyone up by 6:30am, packed up, dumped the tanks and we all pulled out by 9:30am. We all had breakfast at 10am at Flatbed Ford Cafe in Winslow, right across from the famous corner. We had an amazing breakfast with omelets, toast, potatoes, skillet dishes and lots of coffee and drinks for all. Said our goodbyes and Nicole and the girls were headed back to Scottsdale and we are headed to Nevada.
Heading west brought a smile to my face as I started to see the snow covered mountains. At 11:15, I insisted we not pass this place again for I really needed a diversion!!! We stopped at Meteor Crater….I got the look when it was $54.00 to see a HOLE!!! We toured the museum, rode a corny ride then took a guided tour around the rim of the meteor! Wind was really blowing and we could see dirt devils out in the desert. Climbed to the highest point & what an amazing view! It was a great stop after all!
3:50pm stopped in Kingman, Arizona at a Petro station for a bathroom break and Gatorades and lots of ice! This area is along Route 66 in northwest Arizona. There are lots of murals & the Kingman Railroad museum but we were pressed so no time to do any more touring! Along the road we saw a lot of dead deer and Elks as we headed to Nevada. The worst roads!!! Lots of wind turbines, Joshua Trees way up the mountain sides.
Crossed into Nevada – the Hoover Dam in sight and headed to Boulder City. 6pm we arrived at one of our favorite places in the area….Lake Mead RV Park…. Lake View site #17. Set up, cleaned the inside and then sat outside admiring the lake. What a beautiful view. 8pm just heated up leftovers and sat outside watching the boats and planes arriving in Las Vegas!
Today’s thoughts……We left a Hippie area to drive through NOWHERE with nothing to see to then see a METEOR CRATER in the MIDDLE of the DESERT with SNOW CAPPED mountains in the distance with dirt devils all around us then back onto the worst roads…..to now PARADISE on a Lake! We traveled 295 miles today!
Monday, May 20th, 2024 – Up at 7am!!! Bright, sunny and windy morning. 72* with a high of 92* and night low 68*
Enjoyed our coffee & tea outside watching the boats on the lake. At 10am we left to do a few errands then to head to our friends new home. Stopped at Auto Zone for 2 boxes of DEF which made Mr. Hard To Park very happy then at Vegas Valley Mart for diesel …$3.59/gal…83.35 gallons = $300.00. Stopped at a local store for an orchid, cards and snacks. Then a McDonald’s…ahhhh! As we drive to the Vegas we are always amazed at all the metal works around town as they decorated the road over passes.
We arrived at Matthew & Anthony’s new house. {friends we met 12 years ago on a cruise}. Anthony had an amazing spread waiting for us…charcuterie boards, fruits, meats, cheeses and yes Prosecco! We got a tour of their beautiful 2 story house, yard and new pool! We relaxed, and caught up then the adventure begins! They drove us around town in their new Tesla. Amazingly very comfortable! First stop Taps & Barrels. We served ourselves Beer & Seltzers from taps on the wall. They taught us a new card game Kings Corners and we played a few games then played a few of the boxed games there. Now off to dinner at OHJAH Japanese Steakhouse for Hibachi. Great meal cooked right in front of us. Chicken, fried rice, garlic and edamame. Then Matt summoned his car and the Tesla backed out of the parking spot and it drove up to the front door! Crazy!!!!
Now off to Neon Bone Yard Museum. None of us have ever been here before which was pretty interesting. So cool to see all the old signs of famous Vegas places from the 30’s that we’ve seen in so many movies. So how does one prepare themselves for our next place that they brought us???? I thought 3 years ago we saw it all the first time they showed us around the Strip but oh no!! They parked at Circa Hotel and we walked through the hotel and saw the Largest Sports Bar. OMG Huge and all the TV screens! As we walked through a bar there was Vicki Vagus a 20 ft neon sign. She has watched over Fremont Street for over 4 decades.
Yes, Fremont Street is where the boys took us! As we stepped onto the street… A huge dancing Gorilla, bands on stage to our right, street performers, Vegas Girls in thongs to the right, 2 layers of zip liners above us and lights all over blinking and changing! Then as we walk there’s “Heart Attack Grill”….if you’re 350lbs you eat for free…you are given a hospital gown to wear as you enter, eat your meal which is served by girls in very little nurse’s uniforms and you get paddled if you don’t finish your meal! Water is infusing into your glass by IV bags!!! Then on the corners of the streets… people with big snakes and more! My eyes can’t undo this shit! Next we went to El Cortez which is the oldest Hotel & Casino had a drink and off to Pierre Container Park which is an outdoor shopping mall and entertainment complex! Well if that isn’t enough at sundown, right then and there as we stood… This Paying Mantis, 55 feet tall, 40feet long, 30 feet wide is awaken by drum circle celebration, the Call to the Mantis….and starts shooting fire and dances to Sweet Home Alabama! Thought I was going to pee my pants after i jumped 10 feet! It burns about 50 gallons of propane each night with the 6 story high flames it shoots out!
After the wild night we went back to Matt & Anthony’s house where we spent the night so we could enjoy them again tomorrow! Traveled only 45 miles today.
Tuesday, May 21, 2024 ~ Had a good night sleep then showered and sat outside by the pool for awhile. When the boys got up they made such a delicious breakfast. Bacon, sausage, toast, fruit, eggs, hash browns and of course Prosecco! Cheers! We relaxed by the pool enjoying the sun and each other’s company. Today’s adventure was in town at the new Tiger Woods Golf-place called Pop Stroke Putt, Eat & Drink. We did both 18 hole courses while enjoying the incoming planes to Vegas airport and Matt taught us how to tell if the plane was an Airbus or Boeing. You can order drinks while you’re golfing and runners bring it right to you. Then there’s scattered coolers along the course with wash cloths for you too cool yourself, then pails to leave them in. Such a cool place! Ping Pong, corn-hole, bars and a restaurant. We then headed back to Boulder City and we stopped at Albertsons for things for dinner. We grilled steaks, pork chops, sweet and regular potatoes, Caesar salad and cookies for dessert. Matt & Anthony left around 11pm. What a great day together. Traveled 40 miles today.
Wednesday, May 22, 2024 ~ Slept In! 10am 77* Clear sunny sky! Such a relaxing morning enjoying the views of Lake Mead, the sun and our coffee & tea while sitting outside. Took care of reservations, wrote out cards, got laundry ready for later and called home. Everything is good! Had cereal and fruit for lunch then took a little nap! 3:30pm Stopped by post office, McDonald’s for our diet cokes and split a Grandma’s McFlurry! Yummy! 4:15 91* Tim helped me get our laundry started at Boulder City Bubbles Laundromat. We had 5 loads to wash & dry + $25.00. This was the cleanest, friendliest, most helpful Laundromat in all of our travels! Highly recommend. Tim went and washed the truck and when he got back I was finished. Topped off the fuel $3.84/gal ~ 10.265 gal = $70.30. Drove down to the marina to check out the water level and it was up since 4 years ago when we were last there. Back at the CG … made the bed, put the clothes away and grilled pork chops and sweet potato. Enjoyed the sunset and the moon rise. It was relaxing watching all the planes coming in. Traveled 19 miles today.
