38* & windy brrrr! Started the morning going to the visitor’s center so I could get my Homolovi National Park stamp! Now the adventure begins! We drove to the south entrance (Rainbow Forest) at Petrified Forest National Park. Stopped at the visitor center, toured museum and went on 3 trails! Hiked Giant Loop…..where we saw Old Faithful… a petrified log at almost 10 ft around at the base! 🪵, Long Logs Trail ….site of a Triassic log jam, covered in long petrified tree trunks, and Agate house trail (a seven-room reconstructed Pueblo ). About 3 1/2 miles to start the morning off! Away we went through the park stopping at overlooks and amazed to see as far as you could see all the petrified wood as well as the Painted Desert with all its beauty of colors. Blue Mesa took our breath away! Walked down a trail with a grade of 35% but have to admit we didn’t make it all the way down! Vibrant blue, purple, gray badlands were magnificent in all their glory! Next Newspaper Rock to see Petroglyphs as old as 2000 years. As we continued through the park the Painted Desert overlooks were amazing. Then where Route 66 once was in the park stood a 1932 Studebaker! The last site in the park was the historic Painted Desert Inn which has been turned into a museum but is closed due to COVID. Drove back to Winslow on Route 66 for one last time stopping at La Posada Historical Hotel. Ended the night at the Martini Bar ….. having Martini’s! 🍸 What a great day!
