Saturday – ☀Sunny 63* morning Breakfast, filled water tank and packed up and on the road by 9:30am As soon as we were out of the city limits, vast corn, wheat and other crop fields. Then scruffy looking trees and not much of anything around for as far as you could see. When we got to Hondo, population 8800! It is known for its Iconic sign that states, “This is God’s Country please don’t drive through it like Hell”! Lots of dairy farms, old buildings and Mumme’s Wildlife Headquarters and largest everything you need store. As we continued, less and less cars on the road and we are now in nowhere land until we come to Uvalde which had a 20 foot cutout of Matthew McConaughey! Born & raised here  Alright alright alright! Population 15,217 in Texas Hill Country. Known for its production of huajillo honey since 1870’s.🍯 Stopped for our daily Diet Coke’s 🥤then back on the road! As we entered Del Rio there is the Base Camp Alpha military base. Continued our drive to Amistad and found our campground – Governor’s Landing! 1:11pm and this is our first time this trip “First come first serve” and we were nervous we wouldn’t get a site but to our surprise the campground was empty! So we picked out the biggest, best view and went to the pay machine and we’re set …site 5 for 2 nights for a total of $10.00. We had an amazing view of the bridge, Train Bridge and the water. Had lunch, walked the campground then drove to the National Park Visitor Center. You guessed it we earned our Jr. Ranger badge! The ranger told us all about the area, they only get about 12” of rain a year, that’s why the river is down ¾ of what it once was. Also Amistad means Friendship in Spanish.  Drove to Amistad National Recreation Area where we took a few trails and to our surprise to catch the end of a Bass Fishing Tournament. We watched as the truck & boats pulled up to the scales, fish weighed and released into a tank to be released later. We took another trail that led us to the cliff banks of the river. OMG what a spectacular sight to see. Cactus’s in bloom with beautiful flowers along the way. 🌵🌻

Next we drove into Del Rio to check out the town and went into their big grocery store HEB. Just browsed. Found the one and only winery, Val Verde Winery. 🍾🍷 We purchased a bottle of their Rose’ and sat outside for a bit but it was warm so enjoyed the rest in the tasting room. This is the oldest winery in Texas started in 1883 on 12 acres using Lenoir Grapes. Took the truck AKA “Mr. Hard to Park” to get washed! Happy hour back at the campground watching an amazing sunset. Coyotes howling off in the background. Breathtaking evening! Traveled 206 miles.

Sunday – 7:30am 65* sunny and very quiet. ☕ We enjoyed our coffee & tea sitting outside and watching boats passing, small deer roaming & enjoying being out in nature. Made a big breakfast and enjoyed our beautiful site. 2:15 we drove into Del Rio to HEB and filled up our diesel tank…25.51 gallons @ $3.49/gal = $92.79. Stopped at O’Reilly’s auto parts for DEF for the truck.  Found the local Elk’s Lodge #837, enjoyed a drink and talking with the locals. Bartender was born & raised there. Saw 2 deer near the parking lot. Off to Stripes for our Diet Cokes. 🥤 Then decided to try Whataburger 🥮 since they are all over and started in Corpus Christi, Texas! Back to our campground and now every site is occupied! We sat outside enjoying our dinner and view of the lake. 6pm 91* Lots of butterflies, sparrows, mockingbirds flying by. 🦋🐦 Took a walk down to the water then time to say goodnight! Slept with the windows open and Tim rigged a fan in the doorway for the night. Traveled 33 miles today.
