Thursday, June 8th, 2023 10:00am 55* but inside with heater 67*! Spent the morning working on the blog and pictures while Tim did maintenance on the RV. We took our bikes on the 1.5 mile sand trail up to the Big Sable Lighthouse. There we looked through the keepers house, looked at the displays and watched a movie about the lighthouse. We climbed 130 stairs to the top. What a beautiful day and view of the lake and area. Then rode back to RV for a sandwich then back on the bikes over to Hamlin Dam then found a trailhead that went over to an island. We locked up our bikes and away we went. 2.3 mile hike on the Lost Lake Trail over to an island across small boardwalk along the water, up a few stepped wooded areas and back. Dropped the bikes off and we drove into town. First stop was to Meijer for Diesel fuel and firewood.🪵 48.760 gallons @ $3.589/gallon = $175.00 Then our 2 daily Diet Coke’s 🥤 & some firewood. We’re all set now for some ice cream 🍨 at The House of Flavors! OMG were we blown away when we walked in, expecting just an ice cream shop but no, a diner with an ice cream parlor. It’s also been there for 75 years and it’s also the ice cream factory. We didn’t notice the big tanks until we were leaving in the back! We were overwhelmed with the menu and the waitress explained they are known for their turkey dishes. Well it’s 4pm so we decided to get dinner there. I got the traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings and it was very good and Tim got the turkey reuben which was amazing. So ….we got 2 pints of ice cream to go! On our way back the lake was calm so we decided to give the Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse another try. About a 1/4 mile out on the concrete jetty we came upon the lighthouse whose base is in the shape of a ship. Really cool! Came back to the RV where we had a really nice campfire and our neighbors joined us till it got to cold out (10:30ish). Time for bed! We traveled 11 miles today.

Big Sable Point lighthouse – One of the tallest in the state at 112 ft, black & white striped is on the shore of Lake Michigan. It’s 1.8 miles from the parking lot to the beach. The climb is 130 steps to the top of the tower. Standing on ground formerly known by French explorers as Grande Point au Sable, the Lighthouse Board recommended a beacon be placed in Ludington. In 1867, Big Sable Point Lighthouse was constructed, and on November 1 of that year, mariners as far as 19 miles out on the lake saw a constant white light for the first time.

House of Flavors – 82 years making ice cream! 3,400 different ice cream recipes! 🍨 🍦1948 Bob Neal Sr moves to Ludington and purchases 50% interest in Miller Dairy from Al Miller. The name changes to Park Dairy because of the proximity to the city park. They produce milk, buttermilk, cottage cheese and 40,000 gallons of ice cream/year. 1950’s ice cream production increases and in 1959 Al Miller retires. Park Dairy stops processing milk to focus solely on ice cream. 1964 Park Dairy changes its name to “House of Flavors”. Now House of Flavors continues to grow, invest in new technologies, and expand. They produce 28 million gallons of ice cream each year and is Michigan’s largest ice cream manufacturer. 🍨

Ludington North Breakwater Light – 57 ft tall steel-plated lighthouse on eastern shore of Lake Michigan, at the end of a breakwater on the Pere Marquette Harbor. The station was established in 1871. This light was first lit in 1924, and it is presently operational. It was automated in 1972. The light is structurally integrated into the steel and reinforced concrete pier upon which it is built. It has a square pyramidal form, and is white with a black lantern. The original lens was a Fourth Order Fresnel lens. On October 17, 1995 the lens was removed from the lantern, & was replaced by a 12-inch Tideland Signal acrylic optic. Integrated into the tower is a fog signal.
