🛻 49* – Two long 9 hour travel days to get back on schedule and we were so ready to go on a long hike when we arrived tonight! 🚶🏻♀️ (yesterday we drove 490 miles). As we left the campground at Waco, we were greeted by a group of deer grazing at the gate. Getting across Texas was very long and such a boring drive! We saw lots of sheep, goats, cows, turkeys and lots of pecan groves at first then nothing for miles & miles! 4 hours till the one and only McDonald’s all day!!! A lot of the old towns were just that…old, run down and abandoned! It was a dreary, windy, drizzling day! You couldn’t play I spy….. there wasn’t even any trees…..or guess the car because no one was out on the back country roads on Easter! 😱 Then out of nowhere oil wells and windmills as far as you could see! To complete the day… we stopped in Van Horn for the night! The campground was dirt, rocks and a few small trees…. no charm or homey feeling! We got dressed and walked two blocks to El Capitan which had great reviews, only to find out it was closed and that nothing in this 3 block town was open! It reminded us of the movie Cars – Route 66! Today as we were driving through El Paso we could see the border wall separating US from Mexico! FYI..southern New Mexico is equally boring! Adobe and rocks! No landscaping either and at rest areas, signs that say “Beware of Rattle Snakes”! 🐍 🤦🏻♀️ Then to our surprise in the town of Thatcher, snow capped mountains! 🏔 Mt Graham was 10,693 ft!!! What a beautiful sight! Then my first time ever seeing so many cactus in one place as we entered Az!🌵 We now have a 3 hour time difference from home! Arizona doesn’t do “day light saving time”!! 🕰 Nice! After 488 miles today, we arrived at Lost Dutchman State Park! Magnificent beauty! We had happy hour after we arrived, walked the whole campground, took a bike ride then took a 2 1/2 mile trail up the mountain! As we headed back a few deer crossed in front of us! Time to relax! No alarms tomorrow morning!
